Some great covers of the French Elle from 1965. As a pair, I think the vivid colours and the simplicity really work well here. Compared so the modern day covers shown below, these classic sixties covers simply stand out in a more sophisticated manner.

it's such a shame that mags don't experiment with simpler, vintage-inspired covers. i guess it's a risky gamble, but i bet it would get tons of buzz and sell really well.

You should consider that you are comparing the French Elle with American editions. From my understanding even modern day french and American editions differ. Perhaps you should have compared the French Elle of yesterday with the magazine as it is today,,,that would have made more sense to me.
